ABOUT DURAND CUP:

The Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament in Asia and the third oldest football tournament in the world. In 1888, the tournament started off as an Army Cup open only to the British Indian Army troops in India but soon it opened up to civilian teams. This year the Durand Cup is back in Kolkata which is known for its passionate football loving fans and their crazy enthusiasm for the sport.

The Ethos

The Durand Cup is all set to make a grand comeback this year, in the football loving state of West Bengal. The Indian Armed Forces are bringing back the tournament to countless football fans and in this noble endeavour, they are being supported wholeheartedly by the Government of West Bengal. The main mission is to restore the historic tournament to its original glory by bringing together the best football teams of the country in a display of skill and sportsmanship.

129 Years of Competitiveness

The legacy of the Durand Football Tournament began at Dagshai in the year 1888 by Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, the then Foreign Secretary to the Government of India, to encourage and inspire sporting competitions in India among the British Indian Army troops.

In 1940, the Durand Committee decided to host the tournament at Delhi. That year, a team from Kolkata, Mohammedan Sporting Club won the tournament as the first ever Indian civilian team.

Post the British era, the Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS), led by the three Service Chiefs has overseen the conduct of the Durand Cup. Later in 2014, The Durand Cup was shifted out from Delhi to Goa. Keeping the football calendar of the country in mind, DFTS decided to make the tournament a biennial affair and changed the format of the 128th Edition which was held in the year 2016 at Delhi.
